Writing a converter from COLLADA to URDF would be a better idea. That way, ROS tools other than rviz would be able to use the model.
That project isn't a short-term goal here, i.e. it won't be in C-turtle. Contributions are more than welcome, though.

Thinking a bit further I'm guessing you want rviz to be able to read Collada instead of the urdf format, not just the mesh data? That's not covered by that ticket.

I have a ticket to support it, but it's unlikely to happen in time for 1.2: https://code.ros.org/trac/ros-pkg/ticket/3930
In the meantime I'd suggest converting the meshes into STL or Ogre .mesh format.

hi all,
There are several requests to display openrave robots in rviz. Since
openrave can export its robots to COLLADA, and recently robot_models
has started exporting collada, do you think it is possible to add an
import collada module to urdf? Another solution is to just get ogre to
display collada files
(http://www.ogre3d.org/wiki/index.php/Ogre_COLLADA_Plugin)
please advise on what to do.
thanks!
