MESH_RESOURCE (new in 1.1/unstable) is for loading meshes of disk. There's no ManualObject-equivalent for meshes at the moment.

So I've heard rumors of being able to display arbitrary meshes in rviz. Is this what MESH_RESOURCE in visualization_msgs/Marker is for? Essentially I'm looking for something analogous to ManualObjects in Ogre.
