For the record, The same problem also occurs if libdc1394 has been compiled without support for libraw1394, and the message is the same. This can occurs if rosmake is called without --rosdep-install and/or if libraw1394-dev is not installed on your system. In fact, compiling libdc1394 without firewire support is useful to use some of pointgrey cameras that run firewire over usb.
