I disagree. There are many platforms out there where it's one launch file (e.g one cmdline type in) to bring up a screen to show you what point data it is seeing, and consequently what data you can see from the terminal. Given that, you could instruct the students to do stuff with the data using python, C++. In fact, it is the exact same amount of work in ROS to get a prox sensor coming up... to ROS it doesn't care, it's all pointcloud data/laserscan data.....
