Yes, we are already using an embedded python interpreter for $(eval ...). There are two problems with using the roslaunch API to parse launch files: a) the API is not stable and b) rosmon defines some [extensions][1], which would be hard to extract using the roslaunch parser. I am currently working on more complete verification tests to check compliance with the roslaunch XML spec (see spec_tests branch).
