You are right, I just tried to recompile vanilla libdc1394 and it seems to work fine. I guess I did not have libraw1394-dev installed when I first compiled the package, but now that I have it and it compiles and runs fine. Good find!

FYI (this may be a separate problem): I found a build dependency bug
in the libdc1394v2 ROS package yesterday. It needs libraw1394-dev
installed, otherwise it builds without it and generates a segfault on
connection.
