Doing an 'export STAGEPATH=/etc/X11' did fix the problem, but I'm wondering why this error has just started to pop up.

The quick work-around is:

$ export STAGEPATH=/etc/X11

That works on the recent Ubuntu distributions, which all have the file
in that directory.
