Are you by chance using Ubuntu 9.10? Perhaps you found the relevant bug report for Ubuntu:<br><a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libdc1394-22/+bug/462453">https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libdc1394-22/+bug/462453</a>. Comment #8 has a permanent solution.<br>

sudo modprobe raw1394<br>

ls -la /dev/raw1394<br>
