I've synchronized three PS3 Eye cameras and used them for stereo with stereo_image_proc. Beware of the poor quality control on the cameras: out of nine cameras I purchased, one was dead-on-arrival and four were missing IR filters (which makes them useless outside). Even worse, the five defect-free cameras had three different PCB revisions with subtly different layouts.

Once you identify the PCB version of each camera, hardware-synchronizing the cameras is just a matter of soldering a wire to a small contact on each camera (VSYNC on the master and FSIN on the slave). 

Once it was working, the results looked comparable to "real" stereo systems
