Update: The Machinekit and ROS combination shows it's fruits. I have successfully converted an industrial robot arm stripping out the included controller: [Machinekit and ROS controlling an industrial robot](https://machinekoder.com/machinekit-ros-industrial-robot/) Time to look for applications.
