Ian,
Glad to hear you're working.  If you didn't want to do that, the other
option is to add the directory into which you put ros_tutorials into your
ROS_PACKAGE_PATH

like this:
export ROS_PACKAGE_PATH=/home/ian/ros/stacks:/path/to/ros_tutorials
