Hi Gil,
Thanks for the reply.  I'll try that.

I'll also try to figure out how to get a screenshot of the line
phenomenon.  It is very obvious to see, so if you're not seeing it
with the stock Ubuntu packages, I'll chalk that up to something funny
with my (woefully underpowered) MacBook setup.
