Thank you for your interest. About your questions:

For this specific (very specific) research project we chose Nagios as the
first option but it could change further. Sincerely I am not an expert to
talk about other projects or trends. Sorry.

Sure, I agree with you. Again for this specific project is just a research
(prove of concept) and the design does not need to be friendly right now.
