I typically do rqt/qt standalone implementations of everything. However,
when you want all your information coming in and being graphically
visualised in a single 3d space alongside (often superimposed) other kinds
of information coming from the robot - you can't avoid an rviz plugin.

e.g. for some algorithms I'm writing, the best way to debug/visualise is to
run a bag and my algorithm in parallel. I then run a qt application inside
the same process as the algorithm. That way it can access and display huge
volumes of data without having to copy and send that data elsewhere.
However when we run the same algorithm on the robot on an embedded pc,
other developers need to visualise/debug my algorithm alongside many other
parts of the robot at the same time - for them a single remote rviz
instance/view is the best and only way.
