[ros-users] [Discourse.ros.org] Problem in installation of ros kinetic

I followed the steps mentioned in the ros installation document. when i run sudo apt-get update ,I get following error
W: The repository 'http://packages.ros.org/ros/ubuntu $ Release' does not have a Release file.
N: Data from such a repository can't be authenticated and is therefore potentially dangerous to use.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.
E: Failed to fetch http://packages.ros.org/ros/ubuntu/dists/$/(lsb_release/binary-i386/Packages  404  Not Found [IP: 2600:3404:200:237::2 80]
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
please help with solution.
