Abe,

Interesting - thanks for sharing this. I wasn't aware of this company.

"Elphel Inc. has been creating the worlds first open camera systems based on free (GNU/GPL) software and open hardware.
Elphel Inc. is an Utah based company which went into business in 2001 and was founded by the digital imaging specialist
Andrey Filippov (PhD) who before worked for the General Physics Institute in Moscow, Russia, in the area of high-speed
high-resolution, mixed signal design, application of PLDs and FPGAs, microprocessor-based embedded system hardware and
software design, with a special focus on image acquisition methods for laser physics studies and computer automation of
scientific experiments."

http://wiki.elphel.com/index.php?title=Roadmap - also interesting: "CMOS sensor-specific distortions caused by the
Electronic Rolling Shutter do not need to be removed realtime - the PC power may be not enough to do so. It is perfectly
OK to be able to just post-process the video recorded from the camera."

Not sure about this being the ultimate camera for robotics though =) Where's all the 3D love? ;) How about a 5MPixel
PrimeSense 3D sensor? ;)

Cheers,
Radu.
