Hello,

Exist laser range finders (LidarLite) without scanner.
I think that data from that sensors is more like infrared Sharp sensors, so
instead LaserScan (with single range element) better to use
sensor_msgs/Range.

Idea is for this PR https://github.com/mavlink/mavros/pull/292
On mav's range finders usually used as a precise altimeter.
