Reply 1 made the point it's hard to get statistics on open source. I'd confirm that. You could get statistics about binary release downloads from the ROS host and unique visitors. I believe one was shown at ROSCon 2014. It's not going to include statistics about software companies implementing ROS in their robots unless those companies report. The impact of 10 ROS users that are selling products that integrate ROS could easily make 10 unique visitor downloads of ROS millions of users. Or the companies that are developing ROS products for years that have not brought them to market or shared their work. The most accurate statistical usage information would likely be available on use of ROS in education. That might be a worthwhile survey.
