You probably know most of this stuff, but for those who find this
thread in future google searches, the camera1394 Tutorials and
Troubleshooting pages do explain many tricks for getting a camera to
work:

This is hard to document, because so many different cameras claim to
comply with the IIDC spec.
If you find problems not covered in those pages, please share them
with the rest of us, so we can make it better. A Mac OS X specific
section would be a wonderful addition.
