(This is Forrest from the same team in Amazon) Yes our goal is to have an interface so that different types of sinks can be implemented and hooked.
That said, I would suggest the sink should be fluentd agnostic even if you want to use fluentd to consume the data -- or perhaps I misunderstood you in this case...
